WRAP MAP (Mapping Aquatic Priorities) for the Tolovana

TVWA is beginning a new watershed mapping plan for the Tolovana River watershed.... and we need your input.

The Tolovana watershed is vitally important to the Yukon Chinook populations. The final product will be a map of the Tolovana watershed, that will use historic loss, current condition and future threats to prioritize aquatic habitats for restoration and preservation. It will be a tool for permitting and land management agencies to help focus efforts to maintain and improve these habitats on a watershed basis, using salmon as a key indicator species of the health of the habitat.

Meetings are held every other month (3 - 4 hours).

For those of you who were involved in the WRAP MAP (Mapping Aquatic Priorities) for the Chena, this effort will be similar but more intensive as we need to develop a "mini Watershed Resource Action Plan" during the process. This "mini WRAP" will help guide our work and keep us focused on the aquatic resources (the streams and wetlands) of the Tolovana watershed. We will explain the planning process and products in more depth and review what we learned during the WRAP MAP effort for the Chena of 2017/2018.

We will update as the next meeting’s time and dates are available. Please contact us if you'd like to be involved!

Thank you for a great first meeting!

We reviewed the Chena WRAP MAP. We familiarized ourselves with the Tolovana Watershed and identified recent planning efforts to review. We heard about BLM's eastern interior plan. We discussed mining activities in general and other limiting factors. We discussed a number of next steps, including the intent of the November 15th meeting.

Given that we do not have a watershed resource action plan for the Tolovana, we agreed that the next step would be to rapidly identify conservation targets and resources in the watersheds; assess current and future health; identify limiting factors; and strategies to enhance the health of those targets and resources. This will guide the December 11th meeting.
